Executive Board

Dr. Ken Pickar, Director
As a Board Member of IMI, Ken advises the product development, fundraising, and operations management of the company. Ken is a Visiting Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Caltech. From 1999-2003 he was named the J. Stanley Johnson Professor, and was co-Principal Investigator of the NSF-funded Entrepreneurial Fellowship Program. He is on the Board of Directors of the LA Regional Food Bank, the second largest network in the US. He is also on the Board of three for-profit companies (two Public), The South Coast Botanical Garden and on the Executive Committee of the Tech Coast Angels. He joined Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ where he worked in the areas of Ion Implantation and Electron Beam Technology. He has 50 publications and talks on subjects including a review of Beam Processing, written while on a sabbatical year at the Technion- Israel Institute of Technology. At GE Corporate R&D, he was responsible for all Electronics research. Prior to Caltech, he was the Senior VP of Engineering for AlliedSignal Corporation and Chairman of the Corporate Technology Board. His work at Caltech is focused on development of optimum strategies for technological product development, both in high-tech and low-tech markets. He teaches undergraduate courses in product design for the developing world, management of technology, and entrepreneurship. In 2005 he won a Teaching Excellence Award from the undergraduates at Caltech. In the summer of 2007, Ken co-founded the International Development Design Summit at MIT. Ken earned his B.S. in Physics Cum Laude from Queens College, City University of New York, and his PhD degree in Low Temperature Physics at the University of Pennsylvania.
